The Faces of CHS: Meghan Powers

By Nalan Ray

Q: How long have you been working at Chicopee High School?

A: "This year is my fourth year here at Chicopee High."

Q:What is your opinion on YONDR?

A: "I like YONDR."

Q: Why do you like YONDR?

A: "Well, it's great because students can now stay engaged in class and not feel the urge to look down. I feel really disrespected when a portion of the class isn't paying attention while I'm teaching."

Q: What do you most enjoy about your job? A: "I really enjoy getting to know people. I like to meet new people and get to know new people. I'm a people person!"

Q: Have you had any other jobs/careers other than teaching? A: "I was a teacher at a grade 8 school and stopped because I had my kids. I took 4 years off and since college I have bartended for 10 years."

Q: What made you get into teaching? A: "It was my calling and I have wanted to be a teacher since I was a kid. And whatever I learned at school, I would come home and teach the people at home. I've always loved sharing knowledge."

Q: What is your “I almost quit” moment as a teacher?

A: "When my newborn son got COVID, and I couldn't be home with my son, it was very stressful. I really considered leaving at that point."

Q: What was your “this job is totally worth it” moment as a teacher?

A: "Definitely when CHS has the seniors walk through and when you see the kids you teach leave. The 'they made it' moment."

Q: What is the most difficult daily aspect of your job?

A: "There is nothing difficult. I wake up at 4 A.M every morning without issue."

Q: How do you typically spend your breaks and summer?

A: "From the second I wake up to the second the day ends, I do whatever my kids want me to do. That's what being a parent is like!"

Q: Why do you teach what you teach?

A: "Simple. It's because French was always my favorite subject in school."

Q: If you knew then what you knew now, would you still have decided to get into the profession of teaching?

A: "Yes. I'm a married person with 3 kids. Teaching is perfect because I get as much time off as my kids and it couldn't work out better."

Q: What is the craziest thing that's happened to you on the job?

A: "A girl got a migraine from an air freshener and fainted in the hallway. I had to get a wheelchair and take her to the nurse and, along the way, a student randomly pulled the fire alarm out of nowhere."

Q: How different is your personality outside of school compared to in school?

A: "I'm pretty much the same but I'm more silly at work because I have to motivate kids in school who don't want to do their work."
