WEST SPRINGFIELD- The Chicopee Pacers Baseball team traveled to West Side for a 4:00 pm matchup with the Terriers on May 11, 2022. Chicopee hoped to spoil the Terriers senior night, but West Springfield had other plans.
The beautiful spring afternoon smiled down on the 11 seniors who were honored during West Springfield's senior night. The boys dressed in white and blue had their names announced for the final time on their home field. It clearly sparked a fire for the Terriers who would go to win the game 13-1.
The game Started with an early 6-1 Terrier lead after 2 innings. Garrett Daley started the Terriers’ onslaught with a double to start the second inning, where he would later score. This was followed up by multiple West Side hits and walks.
The Terriers seemed unstoppable with hit after hit, and a dropped pop fly by the Pacers infield only added to the pain from the way the game was going. The fans were going crazy for the Terriers’ seniors as they dominated the second and third innings. The Pacers could rarely make the right play during the second and third, which were the most crucial innings as they would determine exactly how the rest of the game would turn out.
Pacer catcher Jason Lozado seemed to have a very tough time controlling the ball behind the plate. He dropped the ball multiple times allowing the Terriers to steal bases on several occasions.
The pacers had hopes to turn things around during the 4th and 5th as they were able to hold the Terriers to just 4 runs over that span, but could not get any runs on the board. With a few guys getting on base in the 4th things looked slightly promising, however the 5th inning was 3 batters and 3 outs for Chicopee.
Pacer player Christian Cruz said, “Well man, the team did good, we played well, West Sides offense was just very strong out of the gate and led them to score runs”.
It shows that the Pacers have the confidence they need to win games but unfortunately the opportunity slipped far away from them. The Pacers faced off with Tantasqua on May 12, 2022, and lost 12-0,
The Pacers will look to bounce back this Saturday May 14, 2022 at 4:00 against Granby High School.
