If you think I am wrong I have two words for you – Wayne Gretzky.
Wayne Gretzky is statistically and proven to be the best player to play in the NHL with outstanding stats and phenomenal plays throughout his NHL career. People would think that the best player ever to play NHL hockey is finally going to become a coach and make an All-Star team out of the Phoenix Coyotes. Unfortunately that was not the case in his favor. Let's give off a few examples.
First off we will give you a general idea on Gretzky's performance the time being he was an NHL hockey player. He played for a total of 24 seasons in the league starting in 1975. That totally averages out 1,487 games played, also in his entire career he scored 894 goals with 1,963 assists following.
You add that up, and that’s 2,857 total points in his career, that is a lot of points. You or any other human being would think wow this guys terrific at a sport especially it being hockey but once you dig up his stats as him being a coach it is the complete opposite.
It is hard to ignore his time being a coach with the Coyotes from 2005-2009. The total record the team performed with Wayne Gretzky as the head coach was 143 wins, 161 losses, 24 ties with a winning percentage of .473. So basically their winning percentage was lower than the even winning percentage which is .500.
That is not a good winning percentage at all for his time being with the Coyotes, another example of a good winning percentage is the number one team in the 2021-22 season is the Colorado Avalanche with a winning percentage of .750. Now that is a shocker for walking in on the team with high expectations.
There is really no argument out there that anyone can say that Wayne was a good coach, it is statistically proven that he did not have a positive season at his time with the Coyotes. Only one season though he went “positive” with a whopping record of 38-37 which is not the best record at all, they never even made it over 40 wins either.
He was also a very overpaid coach in his time, a regular coach averaged around $1 million dollars and Wayne was paid $6.5 million dollars. For around that time of hockey being paid that much was a lot of money and for his record with that team I’d say he was pretty overpaid.
After looking all over this evidence I still stand on my position that he was not a good coach. This coach proves the point that all great sportsmen cannot be great coaches. Being a coach you have to have it in you to succeed and make a dominant solid team.
There is no if’s and's or but’s about his coaching career, if you were a Phoenix fan at the time being when Wayne was the coach, everyone would be saying the same thing on his coaching career.
